The book, which won the Nebula Award for Best Novel of the Year in 1966, is a must-read for seventh grade SOLs – class groups are scheduled to see the play during its run. In the play, we meet 32-year-old Charlie Gordon, a mentally disabled man who sees the world through the innocent eyes of a child. Above anything else, Charlie wants to be smart. Understanding his thirst for knowledge, his teacher Alice Kinnean recommends Charlie for a scientific experiment that promises a surge in intellect.

Enrol for flower show photo competition

Photography enthusiasts are invited to enter the "Spring Blossoms for Celebration" Photo Competition, which is being held in conjunction with the annual spectacular Hong Kong Flower Show. Offering someone a single rose versus a bouquet can speak volumes about the message that you are trying to convey. A single red rose traditionally means that you are deeply in love with someone while a mixed bouquet containing both red and white roses signifies unity. For people with marriage on their mind, two roses entwined to form one single stem is said to represent a deep commitment and hints at an engagement or intention to marry. Getting fresh -- If you put a lot of time and effort into choosing the right flower gift on Valentines Day, you want to make sure that they last and that what you ordered is what gets delivered. The easiest solution is to choose flowers from a company such as ProFlowers, who eliminates middlemen to ensure that your bouquet is as fresh as possible and sends the message you intended.

Cancer Research UK displays vision at Chelsea Flower Show 2007

Today Cancer Research UK unveils plans for its 2007 Chelsea Flower Show Garden, designed by last year's Gold Medal winner, Andy Sturgeon. The garden illustrates Cancer Research UK's vision, 'Together We Will Beat Cancer'. Focusing on the word 'together', Andy Sturgeon has designed the garden so that all the different elements interlink and lock together. The paths leading from either end draw people into the heart of the garden, where the modern amphitheatre then provides a place for visitors to sit together. The most dramatic aspect of the garden is an eye catching 30m long sculpture which consists of five strands of curved oak ribbons, which weave together and wind through the garden, connecting it all. Andy Sturgeon said "Everyone wants to beat this terrible disease and it's a great honour for me to be asked to create a design that illustrates how, together, we can do this." The garden features a pavilion inspired by modern Japanese architecture, with an acrylic roof and end wall which are illuminated at night.

It's Time for Candy, Flowers, a Romantic Dinner and a Trip to the ...

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Jan. 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- If you are a would-be Romeo, make certain you have enough cash in your savings and checking accounts so that you are able to enjoy the most romantic day of the year without straining your finances. Since many a Romeo is also shopping at the last minute for these items, he may not have time to comparison shop and is likely to pay more than he anticipated. Huntington Bank is estimating that the traditional presents of candy in a heart-shaped box, roses and a candlelight dinner could set you back between $160 and $400 depending on your price range. New England winters, even in their most temperate capacity, won't facilitate the growth of lush, verdant blossoms, flourishing in gardens, pathways and fields. The Flower Show presents a bright and beautiful collection of vibrant flora, a much-needed visual spark during the doldrums of winter. Portsmouth artist Amy Brnger offers her newest incarnations of celebrated flower paintings, ranging from gorgeous poppies and violets spilling over the edges of vases to a sweetly singular crocus perched alone against a thick black background.

Classics: 4 flowers and a tomato

From music to movies, football to fairy tales and art to automobiles, every aspect of life has its classics. So why not flower and vegetable seeds? As far as I'm concerned, the time has come for a list of all-time annuals. So I'm happy to tell you that All-America Selections, a consortium of U.S. seed growers, has obliged. .

Flower show at Karanji lake

MYSORE: The Chamrajnedra Zoological gardens Mysore, is organising a flower show at Karanji lake nature park for the public from May 8 to 14, 2007. Melbourne City Council's water spokesman Brian Shanahan yesterday called on the show, which is likely to attract 125,000 visitors, to be moved. Cr Shanahan said the show in April would put great stress on the stricken gardens. The gardens are one of nine heritage-listed parks the council wants exempted from stage 3 restrictions, because of the poor health of some elms and oaks. It is believed the flower show's organisers, the International Management Group, will have to apply to City West Water for an exemption to water commercial displays — a move that could stir indignation among Melbourne gardeners who can water their garden only two days a week.

Battle of Flowers themes announced

The Battle of Flowers Association announced the themes for the 2007 Battle of Flowers Parade, Band Festival, Oratorical Contest and Essay Contest. Cherry Blossoms are blooming 4 months early in the nation's capitol. And here in the Lehigh Valley, similar signs of springtime ...during winter-time... are everywhere. Our pansies kept blooming as you can see in the background here. This time of year, they're usually covered in snow or the top of the plant is completely dead.Josh Grim from Grim's Greenhouse says this is the first time he's seen buds and blooms in January.Everything seems to be earlier or it never really stopped from fall.

Flower show inaugurated at Pilikula:

MANGALORE: Pilikula Nisargadhama Society has plans to set up a Western Ghat study centre to study the environment of the region, J.R. Mr. Lobo said it was difficult to organise a flower show in Mangalore, as most of the plants did not grow in the region's climate. Locally cultivated 15,000 plants are on display at the show. Deputy Commissioner Maheshwar Rao said attempts would be made to make the show an annual event, he said. The exhibition will be on until January 2. "Sweet peas are a wonderful addition to any landscape or vegetable garden," the horticulturist says. They bloom in early spring and provide color when winter annuals are fading and warm-season annuals are just getting started. "Although sweet peas grow three to four months before blooming, the resulting flowers are well worth the wait," Owings adds. If you planted sweet pea seeds in your garden in October, apply a slow-release fertilizer when three to four true leaves are visible. If you have container plants, November is the time for transplanting. Space them at least 6 inches apart. Apply a slow-release fertilizer.

Bargains Galore on The Last Day Of The Flower Show

If you're garden is in need of a new plant or two and you have an eye for a bargain, then Ellerslie International Flower Show is the place to be tomorrow! From 4pm Show visitors can get through the gate for a mere $2, with an hour to check out the plant sale before the big-sell off starts at 5pm.Dave Mee, Director of the Ellerslie International Flower Show, says the plant sale is an annual attraction, a time for people to come back to the Show and purchase goods that caught their eye earlier in Show week.“If you're looking for plant bargains this is the place to be, so come on in and get gardening!" "We are showing how food bought in a supermarket can be used in an innovative way, without being scary," says Jobin, executive chef of Pure Tastes restaurant in Paihia. Harris is a chef tutor from Tauranga. In the first two days, between 100 and 120 people have been attracted to each one-hour kitchen demonstration, during which Jobin and Harris not only prepare the food, but also explain how to adapt each dish and what substitutions can be made.

Making flowers from ... hard drives?

Los Alamos shoppers look forward to the Los Alamos Arts Council's annual Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair for many reasons: browsing work by their favorite artists, seeing by new artists, and, best of all, finding distinctive gifts for every idiosyncratic, loveable person on their lists. This year's fair, to be held from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Los Alamos Middle School, marks 39 years of the event bringing a broad variety of paintings, drawings, sculptures, fabric art, pottery, jewelry, photography and just about any other art form you can think of to one venue. .

Prince a draw at flower show

People rushed to buy tickets for the Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006 exposition on November 24 after hearing about the planned visit of Bhutanese Crown Prince Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck on the day. Agriculture Department director-general Adisak Srisappakij yesterday said there had been a number of advance bookings for the date, which is a Friday. The 26-year-old prince has been popular in Thailand since he attended celebrations in June for the 60th anniversary of His Majesty the King's accession to the throne. A behavioral research study conducted by Nancy Etcoff, Ph.D., of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, reveals that people feel more compassionate toward others, have less worry and anxiety, and feel less depressed when fresh cut flowers are present in the home. "Other research has proven that flowers make people happy when they receive them," said Etcoff. "What we didn't know is that spending a few days with flowers in the home can affect a wide variety of feelings." .

Flower show might not be so cutting-edge

People planning to visit the 2006 international horticulture exposition to see the cutting edge of botanical technology might be disappointed. While insisting the 2006 Royal Flora Ratchaphruek will showcase Thailand's capabilities as a world leader in agriculture, Adisak Sreesunpagit, director-general of the Department of Agriculture, admitted the Kingdom doesn't have the avant-garde goods to show off. He said, however, that the event is still a chance for people to learn more about horticulture, especially since not everyone knows about existing technologies in the country. "You might say hydroponic gardening is not a newly-invented technology, but how many Thais know about it?" Adisak asked. Prawet Saengpetch of the department's Horticultural Research Division said the best technology presented at the event might be the induced off-season flowering of Thai fruits such as durian, longan, mangosteen and rambutan.

Walkaround beckons visitors to ford, bluffs, flowers

The Civilian Conservation Corps built a dam on Brushy Creek in the 1930s, and it's probably like no other you've ever seen. The back side is a series of steps, as if to lead into a big, old post office or municipal building. The front side is the lake; the spill falls over the top and down the steps. The dam is at the back of the Brushy Lake Recreation Area in the Bankhead National Forest. Here picnic tables wait under the trees, a pier beckons from the water and the bathrooms remain in the background. Here, too, is the paved trail suitable for wheelchairs and baby strollers. It starts here and follows the lake's edge all the way to the dam. Campsites are adjacent to the picnic area. Following the asphalt trail from the picnic area and campsites makes for a nice walk, something less than a mile.

Flower show sprouts interest

CASEYS agricultural businesses could soon come up smelling like roses with the seeds sown to host a local stand at the next Melbourne Flower Show. Councillors at last weeks council meeting threw their support behind the move, including deputy mayor Rob Wilson who first planted the idea. The council voted to coordinate a display stand at the next Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show involving Casey businesses, subject to their sponsorship to fund the display stand. Cr Wilson said the stand would give various agricultural businesses in Casey the opportunity to showcase their work and the city. A report will come back to the council at the earliest opportunity to determine the level of support for the stand. .

Roses & Thorns

A ROSE: To the residents of Webster County and particularly the Citizens for Groundwater Protection who this week earned a temporary restraining order against Gulfstream Bioflex Energy from drilling wells for a proposed ethanol plant. Colour and form were arranged to portray all kinds of themes, and leafy and floral parts of the plants were equally used to create fascinating thematic structures. From the floor to the ceiling, every vantage point was used to display these pleasing floral designs. Dominating the show was a Wedding Display that included the Wedding Cake, the Bride and bridal arches. Weddings, of course, lend themselves to beautiful floral displays and this was no different. What was also intriguing were the floral displays depicting the five senses and the uplifting emotions of Joy, Peace, Togetherness etc.

Which Flowers Waters are Gentle Enough for Dry Skin?

Flower waters, also known as hydrosols, are the product of steam distilling the entire flower. As each type of flower has its own properties and components, they each have different benefits. These benefits are more effectively maintained with steam distillation than with the addition of essential oils to water. The scent of a hydrosol is also more true to that of the flower. Hydrosols are generally used as a rejuvenating splash rather than something you wear all day for that kind of dry skin protection you need a shielding lotion but they can definitely refresh the skin, and you. Which flower waters are the best dry skin treatment? * Lemon Balm - in addition to its beneficial effects on dry skin and eczema, lemon balm is also known for its ability to calm and soothe the nerves. * Lemon Verbena - stimulates the skin and gives it a lift.

Flower show gondola now running in Steibis in Allgäu

Having twice provided optimum service, its now running for a third time: the lift in question is the 8-seater gondola which in 335 days transported millions of visitors at the gardening exhibitions BUGA/Munich and IGA/Rostock, and is now causing a sensation in the ski resort of Steibis in the Bavarian Allgu. The Imberg lift has the feel of a top-quality nearly new car. Roughly 40 percent of the components used for the BUGA installation have been used, the rest are brand new. All the sheave assemblies are new along with the rope, which is electronically monitored by an RPD system, parts of the stations and electrical equipment, and the OMEGA III LWI gondolas for which an easy-to-operate continuous loop parking facility has been built. One of the main reasons for purchasing this lift was the drive concept: the leadingedge Doppelmayr Sector Drive (DSD) with its modern reluctance motor has low noise emission and is seven percent more energy-efficient than conventional DC motors.

Guns, tanks and flowers -- Bangkok's latest attraction

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Camera-toting Thais and foreign tourists posed alongside tanks adorned in flowers and chatted up soldiers in Bangkok on Saturday, the capital's hottest attraction since a military coup four days ago. "Okay guys, meet the army and the tanks," said Jackie, a Thai tour guide, as she led a group of Americans onto Royal Plaza square guarded by paratroopers armed with M-16 rifles. Since the military ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, soldiers have received food and flowers from Thais who say they welcomed the army's intervention as the only way out of nearly a year of political strife. The absence of any violence has led some tourists to rebook trips to Thailand despite their governments' travel warnings. Earlier this month, a 20-year-old copper beach tree weighing five tonnes was the first tree planted. The team behind the show has been working since the beginning of the year to choose the best gardens, landscape designs and horticultural exhibits to be featured in the 2006 Show. Exhibition manager Kate Hillier is working closely with many of the designers to ensure their initial plans and ideas will translate into exhibits ready for the opening day on November 15. The show consists of just a few violet-pink chalices on leafless wiry stems, but it captures that potent moment of autumn’s arrival. Until you get used to them, the blooms seem oddly out of season because they recall spring crocuses. But as they return year after year, they become a comforting reminder of a certain pause between summer and the full onset of fall when the weather is pleasant, the garden is full and the leaf colors are in the offing. The bulbs go by the misleading names of autumn crocus and meadow saffron, but they are best identified by their botanic name, colchicum. There are, indeed, autumn-flowering crocuses, true crocuses, including that culinary jewel, the saffron crocus.

Surprise 65th raises funds for flower show

A surprise 65th birthday part was held for Crichie man George Allan at the Aden Arms Hotel, New Deer recently, with a collection taken during the fun in aid of Stuartfield Surgery. From the comedic, sun yellow spires of the ligularia to the showstopping clash of rosy clematis threading its way through the burgundy foliage of weigela in the midst of summer, the live acts on the Bridge of Flowers never fail to draw rave reviews. Lorna Jewell of Malone, N.Y., ogled a fragrant lily as she twisted around one August day to photograph it for her own collection of floral photos. She had been visiting this one town for four days she said, not straying into other villages because the Bridge of Flowers drew her back. From all indications, Brandon Flowers has pulled off something that Hokies coach Frank Beamer couldn't do without a muzzle. He's effectively shut up Jimmy Williams, and, basically, all talk thereof. "Who would have ever thought that? That's definitely pretty amazing, man," said Hokies senior flanker David Clowney, who grew up with Flowers in Delray Beach, Fla. "Doesn't surprise me, though. Brandon just doesn't expose it to the world like Jimmy did. But that's how he plays. He plays like, 'I'm Brandon Flowers and you can't throw the ball at me.' And that's good." While Flowers has much work left before ever matching the career resume of his star predecessor at Tech's boundary cornerback spot, the third-year sophomore seemingly has all matters covered like a glove at this point.

Fabulous flower show

It was blooming marvellous at St Nicholas Parish Hall, Fleetwood at the weekend as the 24th annual Fleetwood Flower Show took place. Activists from NGOs freed pigeons outside the Karachi Press Club for the early recovery of the scientist who underwent an operation Saturday, said The Nation newspaper. The gardens include brown-eyed Susans, marigolds, spider plants, zinnias, begonias, petunias and many others. Why these plants? I love the colors and I like plants that produce a lot of flowers. Challenges, deer protection: The deer ate most of the brown-eyed Susans this year, so I had to fence off the gardens. Fertilizer, special tricks: I use 10-10-10 fertilizer and MiracleGro. I water the flowers every three days or so, depending on rain. Why you garden: It gives me something to do. I love flowers and watching things grow. It also attracts a lot of butterflies and hummingbirds. I have two feeders, and I've counted about 25 hummingbirds every day.
